The NPE Action/Network for Public Education 6th Annual Conference, March 28-29, 2020

The fight to save our community public schools has never been more important.

We’re looking for workshop proposals from our members. We will have workshops on Saturday and Sunday. Each will last approximately 1 hour 15 minutes.

The call for proposals begins on May 12 and runs for 10 weeks, closing on July 21, 2019. Applicants will be notified if their proposal is selected by the first week in August. Those proposals that are aligned with the theme of the conference will be given the highest consideration. Those panels that are accepted must be prepared to register all panelists by August 30 in order to retain their panel spot.

Topics we hope to see addressed in proposals include:
  1. Fighting back against privatizations in all its forms: vouchers, charters, online schools, ESAs and tax credits.
  2. The different ways privatization looks in different communities. How is it affecting your school or community? What impact has it had on your public school's budget?
  3. Effective models of community schools.
  4. Lack of democratic governance in schools: How do we restore community voice?
  5. Grassroots organizing in support of public education.
  6. Fighting "portfolio" districts and the intrusion of City Fund and corporate reform in urban schools.
  7. Strategies for strengthening community public schools with equitable practices.

Process guidelines that will impact our selection:
  1. We are looking for panels that unite participants on a theme, with preference given to geographical diversity of the participants.
  2. Our commitment to diversity in race/ethnicity and gender should be reflected in your panel as well.
  3. Scholarships will be limited this year. Please be aware of the financial constraints we face.

Process Guidelines that must be followed:
  1. No more than 3 people on a panel. You may have a moderator if you want one.
  2. Panels will be approved as submitted, therefore if you need to make any modification, such as a substitution of a panelist or a title change, you must get the approval of NPE’s Executive Director first.
  3. Technology needs must be included with your proposal, although access is not guaranteed due to our limited budget.  Options we hope to have available include an overhead projector, screen, and wired microphones. You will be expected to bring your own laptop and connecting cables. Additional sound is a cost, so we ask that you avoid showing videos.
  4. If selected for the conference, you must register within one month. Upon selection, you will be emailed registration instructions. We will work with any selected panels to help ensure your participation, but we must also have your commitment to attend.
The fight to save our community public schools from those who want to privatize has has never been more important.
