Created in memory of Bill Hansell and to recognize the establishment of ICMA International during his tenure as ICMA Executive Director, the Hansell Fund assists recipients in gaining international experience and learning in a variety of ways.

ICMA offers two $2,000 scholarships from the Scholarship Fund in Memory of William H. “Bill” Hansell Jr. to support participation by U.S. mid-career local government professionals in international events such as the ICMA International Regional Conference.

Application Criteria: 
      · Applicant must be a member of ICMA at the time of application.
      · Applicant shouldn't be a member of the ICMA International Committee at the time of application.
      · Applicants must be mid-career local government professionals, defined as having more than 7 years of experience as a local government manager, assistant manager, or department head.
      · Applicants must submit a budget as part of the application. The scholarship is in addition to any other awards and financial assistance provided by the applicant’s employer or state association. Scholarship recipients will be responsible for all expenses related to their participation in the International Regional Conference or other international event and any optional tours in excess of the $2,000 scholarship award.
      · Endorsement letters from the applicant’s employer must be submitted as part of the package explaining what assistance the local government will provide to the applicant. The employer should describe what it hopes to receive from the applicant participating in the process.

Selection Process: 
Applications will be evaluated by a selection committee led by the vice chair of the ICMA International Committee. Applications will be evaluated based on need, interests, future goals, and support from their employers.
