Methoxyflurane Storage

Introduction
Methoxyflurane is a prescription-only medication used by specially trained lifeguards under the medical license and authority of the SLSNZ Medical Director.

Please read and be familiar with the Standing Orders, Policy and NSOP for Methoxyflurane found at the bottom of this page HERE

Methoxyflurane (Penthrox inhaler), is an effective inhaled analgesic (pain-reliever) medication used to treat moderate-to-severe pain.  It is supplied as a liquid that is administered using a green Penthrox inhaler through which the patient breathes both in and out. A charcoal filter is attached to the inhaler which reduces the effects of the exhaled vapor on personnel.

SLSNZ Policy:

Storage / Safety and security:
All clubs that stock Methoxyflurane have to be approved by SLSNZ. They must apply to the National Lifesaving Manager. Approved clubs must store their units in a secure locked cabinet in the first aid room.  When they are required on the beach during patrol hours, and a methoxyflurane-trained member is present, that member will be responsible for removing the unit from the secure cabinet, putting it into the first response kit, ensuring its safe use, and if unused, returning it to the locked cabinet at the end of the patrol.

Annual Audit:
Approved Club First Aid Officers must conduct an audit of the units annually to ensure the integrity of the product, expiry dates, and stock numbers.  SLSNZ will keep on record a photo of the lockable cabinet & this must be updated & sent through to the National Lifesaving Manager if changed. The National Lifesaving Manager will hold twice-yearly updates with Approved Club First Aid Officers on stock supplies, ordering process, qualified and authorised members, document uses on methoxyflurane.
