IS IT SOCIALISM... OR SOCIAL JUSTICE? A DISCUSSION ON THE CURRENT POLARIZED CLIMATE IN THE U.S.

Barry University’s Core Commitment to Social Justice expects all members of our community to “engage in meaningful efforts toward social change”.

As the 2020 election approaches, we often hear the terms "socialism" and “social justice” used in different contexts.  But what do they really mean?  How did ideas once considered "socialist" become mainstream in the United States for both Democrats and Republicans?  And what do those ideas have to do with concerns for social justice?  We'll go beyond "red" and "blue" to search for common ground in the long-standing American tradition of equality for all.

Round table discussions will engage participants in conversations about how Barry University students, faculty, and staff can further our commitment to social justice while representing our diverse range of political perspectives. This program will be facilitated by Dr. Donna Thomas and Dr. Jacob Ausderan, professors in the History and Political Science department, College of Arts and Sciences.

Born out of a commitment to collaborative service and learning, the purpose of the Mission Town Hall series is to offer members of the Barry University community an informal opportunity to share their experiences and understanding of the university’s mission and core commitments. Students, faculty, staff, and administrators are invited to listen to the experiences others in the community and how it relates to their lives on campus.
