Recognition of State Sporting Organisations
This application sets out the criteria and process for recognition of South Australian State Sporting Organisations (SSO’s).

Definition of sport
The National Sport and Active Recreation Policy Framework agreed by all Australian governments on 10 June 2011 defines sport as:

“A human activity involving physical exertion and skill as the primary focus of the activity, with elements of competition where rules and patterns of behaviour governing the activity exist formally through organisations and is generally recognised as a sport”.
Governance of sport

In Australia, sport is governed through a hierarchy of organisations at national, state and local level.

National Sporting Organisation (NSO)
A national sporting organisation (NSOs) is the pre-eminent governing body in Australia for a sport, taking a national perspective and responsibility for the sport’s development.  As such, the organisation is accountable at the national level for providing its members with technically and ethically sound sport programs, policies and services.

 NSOs are recognised by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC). The current list of ASC recognised NSOs can be found on the ASC’s website: www.ausport.gov.au/supporting/nso/asc_recognition .
State Sporting Organisation (SSO)

A state sporting organisation (SSO) is the pre-eminent governing body for a sport in South Australia.  The Office for Recreation & Sport requirement of a recognised SSO is that it:

- Is capable of representing all South Australians participating in the sport;
- Is affiliated with the NSO for the sport;
- Has sound governance policies and practices;
- Is a legal, not-for-profit entity.
