Dakota County Public Health Department is offering training for community members who live or work in Dakota County to be certified in Mental Health First Aid for adults.

The Mental Health First Aid course is an intensive, 8-hour class that has been developed by the National Council for Behavioral Health to teach people how to help an individual who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The training helps you identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses or addiction. You will learn:
 - Risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems.
 - Information on depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis, and addiction disorders.
 - A 5-step action plan to help someone developing a mental health problem or in crisis.
 - Where people can turn for help — professional, peer, and self-help resources.

The next Adult Mental Health First Aid class offered by Dakota County Public Health will be held on September 13, 2016. Visit the registration page for details.

NOTE: Contact Public Health for information about a version of MHFA tailored for law enforcement, first responders and correctional staff. Visit Fairview Community Health for information about the Youth Mental Health First Aid course on November 17, 2016.
