Course Title: Anatomy of a Sewage Plant (1 hour) - 1 PDH

Speaker: David J. Silverman PhD, P.E., Chief Operating Officer of PSI Process and Equipment, A Division Of Pumping Services, Inc.

Environmental regulations continue to become more stringent, driving the wastewater industry forward. Technology changes rapidly to adapt to these new challenges. The planning, design, and construction of a sewage treatment plant is a multi-faceted, multi-disciplinary effort involving chemical, civil, structural, geotechnical, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation/control engineers, as well as many other professionals.
Attendees will learn about these challenges, the relevant principles and their application by a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to arrive at a solution that meets not only the treatment requirements, but is also economical, operator- and Owner-friendly, and leaves a small footprint on the environment.

This presentation will provide a broad overview of various wastewater treatment processes and how they are incorporated into wastewater treatment plants, with a review of plans and specifications from projects which have gone into construction.

This presentation will include a discussion of screening; grit removal; primary and secondary clarification; biological treatment; filtration, disinfection and recycling of wastewater. Multi-disciplinary design of these systems and their integration into a complete facility will be examined, from review of water quality through preliminary and final design.

It is said the wars of the next century will be fought over water. Once thought of something so plentiful and easily obtained for free, clean and safe water is a valuable resource that must be carefully preserved, managed and almost universally, treated before it can be used.

Modern municipal water treatment facilities are complexes of buildings, tanks, pumps, equipment, instruments and computers that continuously convey, monitor, treat, filter and disinfect water. Bringing these projects to fruition requires an experienced, multi-disciplinary team of engineers and other professionals.
This presentation will provide a broad overview of water sources, water quality challenges, and treatment processes, and how they are designed and incorporated into a modern water treatment facility.

Design elements, drawings and specifications for the mechanical, structural, site/civil, electrical and instrumentation/control elements of water treatment plants will be examined, illustrating the nature and level of coordination that must be effected between disciplines to execute a successful design.

This presentation will include a discussion of water quality regulations and treatment requirements; and a full range of water treatment technologies for both surface water and groundwater treatment.
