At the April 11, 2022 regular meeting of Town Council, Council directed Administration to research reducing the unposted speed limit in Claresholm from 50 km/h to 40 km/h.  This proposed change was discussed with the Town's Emergency Services Committee, which includes representatives from Council, the fire department, bylaw and the RCMP.
  • Reducing speed limits reduces the likelihood of accidents, as drivers have more time to react to a hazard. Furthermore, the reduced speeds will lead to less damage (severity) if a collision occurs.
  • Changing the limit would not apply to the provincial highways (Highway 2, 520), as those highways are out of our authority.
  • All other existing speed zones in Claresholm would not be affected (ie. Playground, school, hospital zones).
  • Over the last few years, several municipalities including Edmonton, Calgary, Nanton and Okotoks have changed their  unposted speed limits to 40 km/h.

The cost to replace the 50 km/h speed limit signs with 40 km/h signs in Claresholm is under $5,000.
Survey parameters:
  • Open August 31st to September 30th, 2022.
  • Only one response from each resident or business owner – property address is required.
  • Surveys can be completed online or on paper.  Paper copies to be returned to the Town Office.
