BACKGROUND

Thank you for your interest in the proposed amendments to the Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Farmed Mink. Proposed amendments will be available for review and comment according to the following schedule:

Public Comment Period launch date: Monday, December 7, 2020
Closing date for comments: Thursday, February 4, 2021
Status: Open for review and comments

The proposed amendments were agreed upon by a multi-stakeholder committee following the National Farm Animal Care Council’s (NFACC) Code amendment process. This is your chance to let us know what you like about the draft amendments and what you think can be improved.

Unlike a Code update (where the entire Code is open to possible revisions), a Code amendment has a limited scope, relating to a defined set of topics or sections of the Code of Practice. Subsequent to a formal review of the 2013 farmed mink Code, the following five topics were identified for possible amendment:
  • Pen sizes
  • Access to next boxes
  • Method(s) of catching a mink and lifting from the pen
  • Identification of body condition extremes (i.e., over and under conditioned mink)
  • Euthanasia methods and confirming death
Important context on the issues identified for this amendment are summarized in this brief document. Participants are strongly encouraged to review this document, which also provides helpful, high-level guidance on the proposed changes.

As research on the above topics is very limited, a Scientific Committee was not formed to undertake a review of research. Under NFACC’s amendment process, formation of a Scientific Committee is optional and depends on the extent of applicable research. However, the Code Committee did consult the peer-reviewed Scientific Committee Report published in 2012 (when the mink Code was last fully updated). The report provides a review of research on many of the topics considered as part of this amendment (housing, nest boxes, body condition, euthanasia). In addition to this report, the committee considered any recent research as well as other credible resources.

INSTRUCTIONS

After you read this short introduction, click “Next” to begin your review. The proposed amendments are shown as either additions in red or strikethrough of text. Each section is followed by a comment box. The Code Amendment Committee will only consider feedback on proposed amendments (i.e., additions in red or strikethrough of text). Any other comments may be collected for future consideration during a full Code update.
You may comment on all proposed amendments or only ones of interest to you. After you have made your comments you can choose to leave a general comment, or choose to be taken to the last page so you can submit your input.

Please be polite. Submissions that include profanity or derogatory or threatening language will not be considered. NFACC may exclude submissions that are inconsistent with the spirit or intent of the Public Comment Period.

Feedback on the proposed amendments will only be accepted through this online system.

If you do not have enough time to review all the amendments at once, you can click “Exit” (top right corner of each page) and return at a later time through the web link or by bookmarking this page. Feedback can only be submitted once from any given computer (i.e., IP address).

Following the Public Comment Period, the Code Amendment Committee will consider the feedback, revise the draft as necessary, and submit a final Code to NFACC. The amended Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Farmed Mink is slated to be released in the spring of 2021.
