Introduction

The following competencies are representative of the skills required for an effective ministry. This is not an attempt to specify all of the competencies required of all ministers in all situations. Church expectations differ according to culture, size, and location of church. For example, some ministers may not be expected to do the full range of these competencies. Specific ministry assignments are often the result of the recognition of a person's spiritual gifts by church and ministry leaders.

Just because you are weak in a specific ministry skill doesn't necessarily mean you need to strengthen that ability. It is better to work from your strengths, rather than spend time improving weaknesses you rarely use. Your ministry calling may not require the development of certain skills. However, this assessment can help you evaluate the gifts on your ministry team and where your team may need additional help to meet the needs of your church or ministry.
