Food Scraps Collection Survey

Arlington County is considering expanding residential organics collection services to include food scraps co-collected in the green yard waste cart, along with yard trimmings. If implemented, this new service would yield a variety of environmental benefits including up to a 20% diversion of the waste stream from incineration to composting and creating compost to amend soils to enhance soil quality. The program would also help to increase Arlington’s recycling rate.

We are asking for feedback regarding your interest in the proposed food scraps collection program. Please respond to the following short survey by Friday, December 4.

Survey Guidelines
  • Survey is only open to Arlington County, VA residents receiving residential solid waste services.
  • One response per household.
Background
  • The annual cost to add food scraps collection would be an increase of less than $12 per year to the Household Solid Waste Rate (HSWR).
  • The new program is expected to divert an estimated 3,200 tons of material annually from disposal to composting and could increase the residential recycling rate by approximately 7% and the County’s overall recycling rate by nearly 2%.
  • Food scraps will be able to be co-collected with yard trimmings and will be able to be placed into the green cart loose or bagged in either paper bags or compostable bags.
  • The food scraps collection program would tentatively begin the second half of 2021.
  • The collection of food scraps is an integral step in the effective management of food waste which has multiple benefits and supports Arlington’s vision to be a more sustainable community.
