Introduction to the survey

Barren-ground caribou are considered a species at risk in the NWT. They were listed as a Threatened species in 2018 under the Species at Risk (NWT) Act. A recovery strategy must be developed for a Threatened species under the Act.

The objective of this survey is to gather feedback on the content, direction, and priorities of the draft recovery strategy. The recovery strategy will be finalized following this period of public engagement.

The scope of the draft recovery strategy includes all barren-ground caribou herds in the NWT except the Porcupine herd, which is considered not at risk at this time (i.e., includes Tuktoyaktuk Peninsula, Cape Bathurst, Bluenose-West, Bluenose-East, Bathurst, Beverly, Ahiak, and Qamanirjuaq herds).
