Community Survey

Dear Hoboken Resident:

The Hoboken Community Center, previously known as the YMCA, is conducting a survey to determine residents’ preferences for recreational programs and community spaces as it plans for the renovation of its recreational and community center. Your input will help shape the future of the building.

Please take 10-15 minutes to fill out the on-line survey:

History
The Hoboken Community Center is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization located at 1301 Washington Street. The building opened its doors in 1927 as the Hoboken-North Hudson YMCA and served the dual purpose of providing housing to low-income men and offering affordable recreational programs for the local community. Due to insufficient funding, the YMCA closed the doors in 2010 to the recreational side of its operations. The Hoboken Community Center manages the residential facility, which was extensively renovated in 2013, and is located and accessed independently from the recreational center.

The Future:  More Than Just a Pool
Today, the Hoboken Community Center has begun the process to revive the 3-floor, 37,500 sq. foot recreational facility through a public-private partnership with the City of Hoboken, the Hoboken Public Library, possibly the Hoboken Public Schools’ Board of Education, and other potential stakeholders. The initial vision includes creating flexible multi-purpose spaces on the second floor to be used primarily as an uptown branch by the Library for its programs but also available for use by other community groups. Recreational spaces for athletic leagues and fitness groups, including a refurbished basketball / futsal / volleyball court, swimming pool and aquatics area are also in preliminary plans. In short, our vision is to create a mini-92nd Street Y for Hoboken.

The renovation of the Hoboken Community Center will be an enormous undertaking that will require your feedback and support. We have engaged an experienced planning firm to perform a feasibility study, which will analyze the results of this survey and present their findings in a public presentation this fall. Please include your email address if you wish to be notified of the date and location for the presentation.

Thank you for your support,
The Hoboken Community Center Board of Trustees
