Statutory Consultation Overview

Glendinning House is a brand new Special School school, approved to open by the Department of Education in September 2020, in Newton Abbot.  It's specialist designation will be children aged from 7 to 19 with social communication and interaction needs, including those on the Autism spectrum, whose needs cannot be met in a mainstream school due to anxiety, sensory and environmental factors.  When fully open we will provide places for 120 pupils from key stage 2 to key stage 5.  Our location, Sandringham Road, Newton Abbot TQ12 4HD, puts us at the heart of South Devon serving a catchment area where currently there is no specialist provision for children and young people with these needs.

Our curriculum will be based in experience delivered through project based learning set in the natural environment, with pupils spending much time outdoors in the natural environment and working with animals.  Pupils will access the National Curriculum alongside a tailor made program to develop their communication and interaction skills in a school designed with our pupils' needs paramount. Our aim is to help pupils achieve their potential through enjoying, succeeding and achieving and ultimately developing independence.  Students at Key Stages 4 and 5 will study qualifications most suitable to them, including GCSEs and A levels available in a range of subjects.  The school will specialise in courses providing qualifications that complement our nature and outdoor learning approaches.  More information on our vision, values, ethos and curriculum can be found here.

We have worked with Devon County Council to develop our provision.  Students will be referred to us via the local authority; all of our students will have an Education, Health and Care Plan.  Please find more information relating to admissions here.

Strong community links are important to us.  During our pre-opening phase we will develop relationships with our community to create opportunities for our young people to work with and contribute positively to their community.

In order for us to open the Secretary of State must enter into a funding agreement with our Trust (please see here for the model funding agreement).  This consultation records the support for our school and is also a great opportunity to gather views, opinions, suggestions and offers of support.  We would be grateful if you would take a few minutes to answer the questions below to show that you agree that this unique provision is right for the children in our area.

Thank you very much.
