Got an inkling of an idea? The annual GenreCon Short Story Comp accepts submissions of genre fiction, on the theme of inkling, up to 1,000 words.

The writer of the winning story receives $500, online publication, and will be announced with a special presentation and reading at GenreCon's Launch Night event.

Entry is free for members and GenreCon ticketholders; $15 entry fee for non-members.

  • Max. 1,000 words (not including title)
  • 12pt Arial or Times New Roman font
  • Double line spacing
  • A4 page sizing, 3cm/1" margins
  • Page numbered
Include the project title at the top of the first page (not included in total word count). Ensure your name or identifying details do not appear anywhere in your submission.

Terms
  • Entries should be previously unpublished.
  • Entries open to all Australian or New Zealand citizens and residents.
  • Multiple entries are permitted.
  • Maximum 1,000 words. Entries exceeding the word limit are ineligible.
  • Identifying information, such as the author's name, should not appear anywhere in your submission (including the file name).
  • All entrants will be notified of the outcome of their submission.
    • No feedback can be provided and no correspondence may be entered into.
  • Entrants grant first right of refusal on the publication of the entry to QWC, if selected as Winner or Runner-Up. Authors retain all other rights.
    • One Winner will be offered $500, online publication and an invitation to attend the GenreCon 2026 Launch Night event.
    • One Runner-Up may also be offered online publication.
  • Entry is free for all GenreCon ticketholders and Queensland Writers Centre members (please ensure your entry details match those of your booking/membership). $15 entry fee for non-members.
