YOU make the GLOBE program work!

Dear GLOBE Partners, Scientists, Teachers, Trainers and Master Trainers,

The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are gearing up for a major undertaking to transform the GLOBE Teachers Guide, and we need your help in making this effort a success. The vision is to create a blended training approach that incorporates both online and person-to-person GLOBE training while retaining hands-on experience for trainees in both approaches. With the ever-increasing use of technology in education, offering opportunities for asynchronous training will give more educators the opportunity to join GLOBE and enable their students to actively participate and enter data. A blended training approach may strengthen and improve the effectiveness of GLOBE training overall. Transforming the Teachers Guide from a text-based to a web-based resource is an important undertaking, capitalizing on the refresh of the GLOBE data and information system that is near completion.

GLOBE has demonstrated how student collection of research quality data can provide useful environmental observations, better student understanding of science, and improved community engagement in the environment. This project aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of new technology in supporting teacher training and professional development in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education. To guide this project, we need your input to help determine what content is appropriate for online modules, what should remain exclusively person-to-person training, and what parts of the Teachers Guide should receive higher priority for online development. As an expert in the implementation of GLOBE, your informed insight and perspectives will strengthen this effort as a collaborative exercise.

In the series of questions which follow, you will be asked to reply only to those questions concerning protocols that you have put to use in either teaching students or training others. Consider your GLOBE training when answering these questions:
  • Could you have learned the necessary skills to complete a particular protocol through an online video alone or in combination with written materials?
  • Could you have learned them more efficiently, thoroughly, or been better prepared to incorporate them in your teaching?
The amount of time that is needed to complete the questionnaire depends on your overall experience with the GLOBE protocols. On average, this should take no longer than 15 minutes to complete.

The names of the those completing the questionnaire by February 28, 2014 will be entered into a drawing for five gift certificates of at least US$50. Thank you in advance for your contribution in making GLOBE ever better!
