TITLE: Teachers As Scholars: Censoring Language: Politically Correct Language and Language Censorship
DATE:  December 5, 2018
LOCATION: Montclair State University-University Hall, ADP Center- Room 1143
TIME: 4:30-7:30
INSTRUCTOR: Alice F. Freed, Ph.D.

People frequently try to regulate and restrain other people’s language. Nations sometimes outlaw whole languages. Elected officials attempt to standardize the language of governmental agencies. The broadcast media censors some words but not others. People object to the language used by some while praising the language of others. Particular groups within society often encourage us to use certain words instead of others. These various social practices not only reflect and shape our attitudes about language but shape our thoughts about the world around us. In this seminar we will consider the notion of censorship in language and consider why language is such a powerful instrument for shaping our social and political life.
