We work closely with our Member Societies to jointly maximize the impact of microbiology across Europe.

The Spanish Society for Microbiology (SEM), a FEMS Member Society, launched a new initiative of using Twitter as a lesson delivery method to teach an entire course of General Microbiology in 2016 and 2017. This Twitter-based Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) was primarily aimed at a Spanish-‐speaking target audience and was conducted in Spanish.

Following the success of these two MOOCs, SEM is now in the process of launching its first pan-European microbiology MOOC via Twitter in English. Using the hashtag #EUROmicroMOOC, this MOOC is scheduled to start in September 2018.

SEM is looking for enthusiastic members of the microbiology community to get involved as potential Twitter teachers. You should have some previous experience in using Twitter as a science communication tool. The MOOC is free and your participation as a teacher is a voluntary contribution to promote public engagement with microbiology.

You can use this form to register your interest before the deadline of 30 April 2018 - it should take only 5 minutes to complete. After the deadline, you will be contacted with further details on the next steps in the process.

For any further information about this MOOC, please email Ignacio López-Goñi (

Thank you for your interest!
