OUTLINE:
“Journeys towards establishing a service of quality in Sustainability. How we established a culture of sustainability at C&K Arana Hills and C&K Redlands Community Kindergartens”.   Margaret and Jo will take you on a journey through the process of embedding sustainable practices in their centres. They will examine and discuss the many ways you can engage your staff, children and the wider community so that sustainable practices and procedures are engaged in every day.  With lots of visuals they will demystify what it means to be sustainable.  (This workshop received excellent ratings at the 2014 ECTA Annual Conference)

PRESENTER BIOGRAPHIES:
Margaret Sear has taught in community kindergartens since 1969 and is a leading practitioner in the area of Education for Sustainability. This was reflected in all areas of her teaching at C&K Redlands Community Kindergarten where she worked to enrich the outdoor environment of the Kindergarten as a stimulating, challenging and natural play-space for children that encourages free choice, and constructive risk taking through the inclusion and use of natural play materials. Margaret has been recognized by Redland City Council for her efforts to promote sustainable practices in industry and was awarded a World Environment Day Workplace Champion Award at the 2010 World Environment Day celebrations.  Margaret has worked to achieve sustainable environments and practices throughout the Centre and in 2013 Margaret and her centre won the C&K Eco-Efficiency Award for Sustainability. She featured in the ECA PLP EYLF videos http://www.earlychildhoodaustralia.org.au/nqsplp/e-learning-videos/talking-about-practice/embedding-sustainable-practices/  and several ECA TAPS articles. Margaret is President of and a long time member of QECSN Inc. (Queensland Early Childhood Sustainability Network and is presently consulting with and mentoring services in sustainable practices including curriculum and environments.  She is a member of ROGI Redlands Organic Growers and promotes organic principles. 

Joanne Sorensen is an Early Childhood Teacher who has worked in a variety of teaching positions both in Australia and internationally, with various age ranges, since 1990. Joanne has worked for C&K for many years as a Teacher and Co-Director at Arana Hills. Joanne’s teaching and interactions have had a strong focus on Sustainability and Benefit Risk experiences, as well as this she is a member of QECSN -the Queensland Early Childhood Sustainability Network. Joanne has also had the opportunity to visit Denmark on several occasions where she has been able to interact and learn from several Nature Kindergartens programs– a great source of inspiration for her. Joanne is the recipient of the Sustainability award for Excellence in a service (2013) and most recently received a certificate from Moreton Bay Regional Council recognising Arana Hills as the first service to participate in the ELC Waste Minimisation Program 2010 to 2014.

The Early Childhood Teachers Association (ECTA) is a Queensland based not-for-profit association.
Our members work in all areas of early childhood education and care from LDC to Primary School.
