Thank you for considering being apart of the Poverty Matters Summit...

The Social Development Commission (SDC) has partnered with our state association, the Wisconsin Community Action Program (WISCAP) to co-host the Poverty Matters Summit “Statewide Edition”. Through this partnership, we hope to engage the community as we address our conference theme; Sharing our Stories, Cultivating Our Solutions: Closing the Rural-Urban Divide.

Over the course of the conference, we aim to explore the shared experience of poverty and the interconnected economic, social and political life of rural and urban Wisconsin. Participants will be challenged to examine the national, regional and local systems at play and consider how these shape policy and our collective response. By drawing attention to the structural underpinnings of poverty, we believe a well-informed and intellectually honest discussion can take place and ultimately help lead to moral choices and more effective anti-poverty policies and strategies.

Date: September 27 - 28, 2018

Location: Hyatt Regency Milwaukee

Audience: Community leaders, front-line workers, board members, human service professionals, educators, advocates and people experience poverty in Wisconsin.

Preparations are well underway and you can help make the 2018 conference successful. Statewide experiences and perspectives—rural and urban alike— are all welcome. We would like you to join us in this effort by submitting your workshop presentation on best practices and thought-provoking ideas which consider our conference theme.

We are seeking proposals that address the following topics:
  • Housing
  • Transportation
  • Health
  • Education
  • Workforce Development
We are asking that these topics include evidence of the following barriers and intersections.

  • The Ism’s: Examine the ism’s (racism, sexism, classism, etc.) that exist in Wisconsin’s communities and recommend approaches to effectively address it.
  • Trauma-Informed Practices: Confront the trauma that exists in our communities. Identify what is currently being done and make recommendations to develop a comprehensive approach to effectively deal with the issues long-term.
  • Policies & Systems: Examine biases, inequalities, systemic abuses, and assess the political will to change policies that create an exclusive society as opposed to an inclusive one, providing opportunities to all that seek it.
  • Economic Development: From a policy perspective, economic development can be defined as efforts that seek to improve the economic well-being and quality of life for a community by creating and/or retaining jobs and supporting or growing incomes and the tax base.
By participating in this conference, you will help us uphold the promise of Community Action:

The Promise of Community Action
