Course Title: Better Understanding of Roofing Systems (2 hour) - 2 PDH – NY1869

Speaker: Joe Strickland, Manufacturer's Representative, Johns Manville, A Berkshire Hathaway Company.

Attendees will learn about an in-depth look at all aspects of the low-slope roofing systems as they apply to roof design, specification, installation and performance. It meets the CES criteria for the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) and the Institute for Roofing & Waterproofing Consultants (RCI).
The presentaton covers these major topics:

* Commercial/Industrial Roofing Market Overview & Introduction - A brief look at the C/I roofing market by membrane and insulation usage and current trends. An introduction to the low sloped roof as a system.

* Built-up Roof Membranes and Bitumen’s - Historical significance · The role of bitumen’s in built-up roofing, Types available and their characteristics · Selecting the right bitumen for the job · Types of felts and characteristics · Properties and performance of the roof membrane · Membrane construction · Top surfacing materials and selection considerations.

* Thermoset/Thermoplastic Membranes - Material types, properties and characteristics · Systems, application and performance · Flashing designs · Fire and code requirements · Specification considerations.
* Modified Bitumen Membranes - Types available and their characteristics · Membrane construction and performance · Fire and code requirements · Flashing designs · Specification considerations.

* Flashing/Accessories - What they are and what they do · Materials used for flashing construction · Typical flashing and edge treatments · Expansion joints, roof penetrations, counter flashing, cant strips and caulking.
