Overview

Consistent with the ASA Strategic Plan, the ASA Board of Directors has established the DEI Upstanders, which is a standing board committee ensuring that ASA promotes equity, combats racism and other systemic inequalities, and fosters inclusion in all of its advocacy work, programming and in the employee lifecycle at ASA.

Additionally, the Upstanders leverages the insights, knowledge, talent, relationships and experience of its members and advisors to help position ASA as the go-to resource and leading repository of expertise with regard to diversity, inclusion, and equity in the field of aging. The Upstanders will work alongside, and consult with, ASA’s staff, five advisory councils and the constituency groups to ensure each integrates attainable, actionable, relevant, and specific DEI goals into their respective action plans.

The Upstanders are composed of ASA members committed to working together to make positive change by fostering diversity, inclusion and equity.

The Upstanders is led by two co-chairs, who guide the work of the group. Once appointed, Upstander members will have the opportunity to weigh in on the group’s Action Plan.

We are seeking applicants from a cross section of sectors (such as business, academia, nonprofit and government), experience (including students, senior leaders, seasoned frontline staff and retired members), disciplines (such as tech, social work, community-based services, arts, community engagement and financial services) and diversity (such as members of all ages, members of color, members with disabilities, all religious beliefs, and LGBTQ+ members).

Please use this opportunity to apply for the DEI Upstanders if you feel ASA could benefit from your knowledge and experience within the areas of DEI, even if it is an area you haven’t traditionally engaged in with ASA.

Two-year term. Upstander members should expect to spend between 16 and 20 hours each year advancing the work of the group, including attending quarterly meetings.
