The City of Markham, in partnership with the School Board, is taking part in a National School Streets pilot at Black Walnut Public School this spring. School Streets are designed to reduce traffic near schools during arrival and dismissal times to support student safety, well‑being, and active travel (such as walking, cycling, or rolling).
The School Street pilot project at Black Walnut Public School will take place from
May 19 to June 12, from 8:45 to 9:15 am, and 3:15 to 3:45 pm during school days. The project will involve
traffic restrictions along John Allen Cameron Street in front of the school, from Shady Oaks Avenue to the staff parking lot entrance, in order to create more space for students to safely travel and play. The restrictions will involve two (2) phases:
1. Closure of southbound travel lane, limiting traffic to one-way (northbound) from May 19 to May 29; and,
2. Full road closure from June 1 to June 12.
This survey is part of the evaluation of the pilot project. The information collected will help us understand current travel patterns and perceptions of safety and traffic around the school before the pilot begins.
