Thank you for your interest in applying to the 2023 Peace Teachers Program of the U.S. Institute of Peace. This year, we are excited to announce that we are accepting applications from across the entire United States and that we will select a cohort of up to 25 teachers. Before beginning the application process, please review the program details below.

Peace Teachers Program
At a time when violent international conflict regularly dominates headlines, teachers are the key to helping young people obtain the knowledge, skills, and perspectives they need to envision their role in creating a more peaceful world and shape new ways to manage violent conflict. USIP’s Peace Teachers Program is a virtual professional development opportunity for middle and high school teachers in the United States. For the 2023 program, it will select a cohort of up to 25 teachers from across the United States to receive education, resources, and support to strengthen their teaching of international conflict and the possibilities of peace. The 2023 Peace Teachers Program will run from July 2023-January 2024.

Participants in the Peace Teachers Program will:
  • Develop a foundational understanding of the American approach to peace and the resolution of violent conflicts in countries around the world
  • Discover new ways to teach about global conflict and peace in their subject areas and receive resources to integrate these concepts and practical peacebuilding skills into their classrooms
  • Build connections with like-minded educators and with the U.S. Institute of Peace
  • Serve as ambassadors for teaching about global conflict and peace in their schools and communities

ACTIVITIES
During the program, participants will:
  • Complete USIP’s self-paced, online “Introduction to Peacebuilding” course (approx. 8 hours) by July 24, 2023
  • Attend a virtual summer introductory workshop on July 24-26, 2023, 1:00-4:00 pm ET each day
  • Lead your school’s participation in marking the International Day of Peace on September 21
  • Design and implement an action plan for incorporating relevant USIP resources into one class
  • Participate in monthly one-hour virtual meetings with your Peace Teachers cohort and USIP staff on the second Tuesday of each month from 7:30-8:30pm ET (August 2023-January 2024)
  • Evaluate and share your experience and the program’s impact
