At Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) we are engaging with providers as partners to help improve quality, provide value and maintain member satisfaction. As partners, it is essential that we look for ways to strengthen our relationships and provide value that is beneficial to each other.

To foster this partnership, we have created a free provider education program called Blue University, which provides a platform to engage industry providers in timely discussions regarding the current health care market. This is an opportunity to bring the focus to and educate on trends, best practices and emerging concerns that may have the largest impacts to our members and providers. Past topics have included Type II Diabetes in the context of equity, race, and social barriers, Opioid Crisis, and Reducing Readmission Rates.

On Nov. 22, 2019, the discussion will focus on the Maternal and Infant Health Crisis. We have invited Joia Adele Crear-Perry, M.D., FACOG, to be the keynote speaker at the fall Blue University event. Dr. Crear-Perry is the founder and president of the National Birth Equity Collaborative, whose mission is to create solutions that optimize Black maternal and infant health through training, policy advocacy, research and community-centered collaboration. Recently, Dr. Crear-Perry addressed the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to urge a human rights framework to improve maternal mortality.

Additional speakers include Patricia Lee King, Ph.D., MSW, who will speak about the Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative (ILPQC) work on initiatives related to maternal and infant morbidity/mortality and looking ahead to the upcoming work on a statewide Birth Equity Initiative in 2021, and Robin L. Jones, M.D., to discuss Illinois’ first Maternal Morbidity and Mortality Report from the Illinois Department of Health’s Maternal Mortality Review Committee/Maternal Mortality Review Committee-Violent Deaths Committee.
