Benwood Bridging the Gap Scholarship Application for Hamilton County-Chattanooga high school seniors

In recognition of its 75th anniversary, The Benwood Foundation will award $300,000 in scholarships to a group of highly accomplished, economically disadvantaged Hamilton County students. Beginning in July of 2020, Benwood will support fifteen high school seniors through their college journey, awarding funds to cover unmet college costs, arranging mentors, and providing summer internships and other high-quality experiences to ensure that these “Benwood Scholars” succeed at every stage of their college journey.

The Scholarships will be awarded to outstanding members of the Class of 2020 from Brainerd High School, East Ridge High School, Hixson High School, The Howard School, Red Bank High School or Tyner Academy.  Recipients must have a GPA of at least 2.75, be excited about attending college in the fall of 2020, and have demonstrated perseverance and leadership.

The Benwood “Bridging the Gap” for Gateway Scholars Scholarship Program is a last dollar need-based award through the Benwood Foundation and in partnership with Public Education Foundation and Hamilton County Schools Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation from a teacher, principal, or community or business leader, meet the need-based requirements, and complete the Benwood “Bridging the Gap” for Gateway Scholars Scholarship online application by June 12, 2020.
The Benwood “Bridging the Gap” for Gateway Scholars Scholarship Program is
  • A last dollar need-based scholarship through the Benwood Foundation offered to students graduating in 2020 from the following Hamilton County Schools:  Brainerd High School, East Ridge High School, Hixson High School, The Howard School, Red Bank High School or Tyner Academy
  • Has a GPA of 2.75 or higher
  • Is excited about attending college in the fall of 2020
  • Demonstrates perseverance and leadership
  • Submits two letters of recommendation from a teacher/principal/community or business leader
  • completes the Benwood “Bridging the Gap” for Gateway Scholars Scholarship online application by June 12, 2020.

Scholarship awards will vary by recipient and be contingent on the unmet costs for room & board, tuition, fees, books, or transportation. The resources will “bridge the gap” of costs that have not been covered after institutional, state, and federal financial aid and other outside scholarships are applied. The scholarship is a need-based scholarship and is renewable up to 4 years.

Scholarship Criteria

  • This need-based scholarship targets students with a family income of up to $50,000. Family Income combines parent and student Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) plus untaxed income, such as alimony, child support, social security income, and other forms of untaxed income reported on the FAFSA.
  • Meet minimum GPA requirement of a 2.75 GPA by June 12, 2020
  • Must submit complete copy of 2020-2021 Student Aid Report (SAR)
  • If selected as a recipient, applicant will be required to attend 2 mandatory events per year while enrolled in college
