The Institute is committed to building our capacity to make legislative and policy interventions that advance Black communities and our futures. The COVID pandemic makes policy advocacy for Black people even more important – we are at the center of an economic crisis, a public health crisis, and a crisis in our democracy, and the impacts on Black communities are devastating. We aim to change that through policy development and advocacy that can restore and advance Black communities, changing the rules that are rigged to rules that are just.

The Institute is structured around 90 minute weekly training and individualized support from July to December 2020. This institute will provide participants with the knowledge needed to work collaboratively to build a policy campaign.

Applicant Eligibility:
-The Institute is specifically for Black people who are already involved  in organized efforts to improve the lives of Black communities.

-Black cisgender and transgender individuals, non-binary and genderqueer people are encouraged to apply. Black migrants and Black people with disabilities, and Black people who are formerly incarcerated are encouraged to apply.

-Applicants must be sponsored by an Organization “Organization Sponsor.” The sponsor can be an institution, formal or informal organization or nonprofit. It can be a for-profit, non-profit, or government group. The applicant can be a paid staff member or volunteer associated with the organization. This organization will be provided resources to support the applicants participation in this program.

-Black people living in the United States may apply; priority will be given to individuals from these states: CA, FL, GA, AL, LA, MS, NV, IL, TX, and WI.

-Individuals who apply with others or who demonstrate their ability to form a coalition to create and engage in a policy advocacy campaign, will be given priority in their application.
