Introduction to World Allergy Training Schools (WATS)
The objective of the World Allergy Training School (WATS) is to develop learning communities, appropriate to a specific regional context to build sustainable capacity in allergy. Our goal is to strengthen existing knowledge and skills and encourage local experts to apply this knowledge to further develop the specialty of allergy and to widen the provision of patient care.
The ESP World Allergy Training School is a joint program of the World Allergy Organization (WAO) and the American College of Allergy Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI).
Each WATS is typically held over one day, usually from about 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with a break for coffee mid-morning and lunch. We have found that a combination of lectures, workshops, and interactive case discussions work the best and, while we will take into consideration specific program requests, there are some components that will be included in all of the WATS programs. Where possible, participants will be asked to do pre-reading via online learning management system and will be required to do pre- and post-assessments to assess the programs acceptability and effectiveness.
Organizational Roles
World Allergy Organization (WAO): WAO is the lead organizer for this event and WAO’s committee, the Emerging Societies Program (ESP) selects locations, faculty, course outlines, logistical support, and financial assistance.
American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI): As WAO’s partner in this program, ACAAI is integral in the development of the scientific program, financial assistance, and through faculty representation.
Host Society: The host society works closely with WAO and ACAAI to schedule the event, secure meeting space, identify and invite attendees, and to provide limited financially support.
Local organizing committee: The local organizing committee 1) identifies, when appropriate and feasible, local faculty to work with WAO faculty during the event; 2) helps to determine the content and level of material to be presented; 3) translates material prior to the course when English proficiency does not reach a high professional level if host society is not providing live, simultaneous translation during the event; and 4) co-ordinates events on the day. Providing the WAO a complete list with name and email of all participants will be required at the conclusion of the WATS program. Thereafter, each participant will receive an evaluation survey from WAO to complete and return. Once completed curveys are received, certificates of attendance will be emailed to each participant.
