Study characteristics:

Bridges in Mathematics Third Edition is a comprehensive K–5 curriculum that is designed to promote deep understanding of mathematical concepts, proficiency with key skills, ability to solve complex problems, and development of positive mathematics identities. During Bridges instruction, students are actively engaged
as capable mathematical sensemakers, drawing upon their knowledge bases to support learning. Bridges also supports teachers in delivering engaging, rigorous, standards-based instruction
while incorporating equitable and effective teaching practices.

The Math Learning Center (MLC) and Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Research and Reform in Education (CRRE) are seeking school district partners for a Bridges in Mathematics Third Edition research project.

The goals of the research project are to:
  • Examine short-term and long-term program impacts of Bridges on student learning
  • Understand educator implementation of Bridges
  • Refine professional learning experiences for Bridges educators

Benefits
of the research partnership:
  • Bridges curriculum kits for participating K-5 classrooms provided at no cost by MLC.
  • Professional learning provided at no cost by MLC including 12 hours of workshops plus an asynchronous course.
  • Participating teachers will be compensated for all research activities completed.
  • The evaluator, CRRE, will work with district leadership on all data collection instruments and include district interests where applicable.
  • The evaluator will share evaluation findings with the district stakeholders, whether through a report or presentation.

Timeline:
The research partnership will span 4-years. Key activities in each year include:
  • 2023-2024: Planning and partnership building
  • 2024-2025: Half of participating schools* begin implementing Bridges
    • Other schools continue using their previous math curriculum serving as comparison schools
  • 2025-2026: Additional participating schools begin implementing Bridges
  • 2026-2027: All participating schools continue implementing Bridges
*Note: The study design does not require the randomization of schools or that all schools in a district implement Bridges as part of the research project. The decision about which schools will implement Bridges in each study year will be made in collaboration with our district partner.
