We realise that you are taking valuable time to complete it, so we want to explain what it is for and how it will be used.
The survey is an important element of research commissioned by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) and conducted by Ernst & Young (EY).
It will provide baseline information about the extent of reporting and regulatory obligations on Australian charities and identify target areas for reducing the burden.
Building upon recommendations from the December 2013 forum, Measuring and Reducing Red Tape in the Not-for-profit Sector, the research will contribute to the ACNC’s ongoing efforts to reduce red tape on charities and is a valuable contribution to the Government’s deregulation agenda.
To accord with the Government’s deregulation costing methodology, some technical terminology is used in the survey – definitions have been provided throughout to assist.
Also, as charities are subject to both Commonwealth and state/territory regulatory and reporting obligations, three questions (5, 6 and 7) are in two parts: all obligations; and Commonwealth obligations only.
In addition to informing policy and practice at the ACNC and across Government agencies, the de-identified data obtained from the survey will be published on data.gov.au so that it is available to charities and the broader public.

This survey is independently administered by EY and is subject to strict confidentiality.
ABNs have been requested in order to verify survey respondents and to avoid you having to provide information that is already available publicly on the ACNC register or Australian Business Register (EY will supplement the survey data with publicly available data).
