* 1. According to the Auditor General, of the 1,624 students who entered into an early immersion program in 2005, only 10% achieved the goal of advanced or above by the end of grade 12 in 2017. How important is it to you that all New Brunswick children are given the opportunity to graduate with at least a conversational level of ability in both official languages?

* 2. A national teacher shortage means 41% of Grade 1 and 2 teachers do not have the level of proficiency in French that is required to teach the French immersion program. This has created urgent staffing challenges where we have teachers instructing below the acceptable level of proficiency. How important is it to you that children in French Immersion classes be taught by teachers with a high level of French competency?

Results from the 2018 provincial assessment of French Oral Proficiency indicates students who entered French Immersion in Grade 3 scored approximately as well as those who previously entered in Grade 1.  In fact, 92 per cent achieved ‘Intermediate’ or above (considered conversational level in New Brunswick), with 2.6 per cent achieving the two highest levels for the first time. 

Given the now documented success of the grade 3 entry point and the challenges we are facing acquiring qualified French teachers at the grade 1 entry point, how supportive would you be of a return to a Grade 3 entry point for French Immersion?  Please note: children currently in the Grade 1 entry program would be grandfathered through the system to their graduation.
