Application Information for 2020

What is the NYSF Equity Scholarship?

The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) is committed to ensuring that as many talented young Australians can benefit from participating in our programs as possible. The NYSF Equity Scholarship has been established to make the NYSF Year 12 Program as inclusive as possible, and is designed to assist students from low socio-economic and/or other disadvantaged backgrounds to attend the Program.

The NYSF Equity Scholarship is made possible by a grant from the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, and NYSF Partner Bayer, and will be awarded to up to 40 students attending the NYSF Year 12 Program in 2020.

The $1,000 scholarship is not paid directly to the successful applicants, but is awarded as a reduction in the NYSF Year 12 Program Fee ($3,150 for 2020). An invoice for the balance of the program fee will be issued to the participant’s nominating Rotary Club, the student or the students' parent or guardian depending on the funding choices made when submitting an application. Where a club has agreed to fund all or part of the fee it is up to the club involved and the participant to agree as to how much, if any, of that balance will be paid by the participant and/or their family.

To be eligible for an NYSF Equity Scholarship, you must be studying in Year 11 in Australia, be an Australian citizen or resident, and satisfy at least one of the following criteria:

  • You currently receive Youth Allowance, Austudy, ABSTUDY, or another Centrelink payment for students.
  • You currently receive one or more other Centrelink income and asset-tested entitlements.
  • Your parent/guardian(s) are receiving the Family Tax Benefit Part A.
  • You are experiencing financial hardship or another form of disadvantage that negatively impacts your ability to attend the Program.

For this application, you will need the following documentation:

  • Income support documentation if you are receiving any Centrelink payments, or if your parent/guardian(s) are receiving the Family Tax Benefit Part A.
  • A letter of support from a responsible person outside of your family (e.g. school principal, year advisor, careers advisor, school counsellor, social worker) who is aware of your personal and family circumstances. Download the letter of support template here.

Application process

To apply for an NYSF Equity Scholarship, you must submit this online form. Submitting an application for an Equity Scholarship does not constitute an application to attend the NYSF Year 12 Program.

The application process for the NYSF Equity Scholarship will run parallel to the broader application process to attend the NYSF Year 12 Program, opening on 1 March 2019, and closing on 31 May 2019. Students hoping to gain funding from the Equity Scholarship will need to complete both application processes, potentially including securing the support of an endorsing Rotary Club (depending on how you fund your program fee). Students who require more information on the general application process are advised to visit our 'How to' guide for applications page on our website:

All information provided in the Equity Scholarship application form will be kept strictly confidential, and only used in the scholarship assessment process. The information will not be used in the selection of students to attend the Program.

Selection process
Applications for the Scholarship will be considered by a Selection Committee, comprising of:

  • A member of the National Youth Science Forum corporate staff
  • A member of the National Science Summer School Inc. Board of Directors
  • An NYSF Alumni representative, selected by the CEO of the National Youth Science Forum.
All applicants will be advised of the outcome of their application, in writing, by 13 September 2019.
