Informed consent

What will I be asked to do? You are invited to participate in this study conducted by PhD candidate Taylor Boreland with the Department of Études francophones, York University. Your participation consists of answering questions about the content of your teacher education program, your personal experiences with the CEFR, the elements of the CEFR you have been exposed to (or not) and your perceived level of preparation with each element. Your responses will assist me in learning more about initial teacher education in Ontario as it relates to the CEFR. At the end of the survey, you will be asked if you wish to participate in a follow-up interview via Zoom.

Why do this? You will have the opportunity to reflect on your experiences and your level of comfort with the CEFR as it relates to your teacher education and in-class practices. Further, this study will allow teacher voices to inform possible changes and suggestions made to the faculties of education to improve the preparation of teachers regarding the CEFR and the implementation of the Ontario curriculum for FSL. This study has the potential to inform teacher educators of teacher candidates’ needs in relation to their education of the CEFR which has inspired the revised Ontario curriculum. The goal is to encourage and/or affirm the necessary changes in initial teacher education to ensure that teacher candidates are well equipped and confident in their knowledge and abilities to teach a CEFR-inspired curriculum. The survey should take approximately 10 minutes to complete.

How is my data protected? All information shared in the study will be confidential. Your survey responses will only be known to the principal investigator and project supervisor. All survey data will be anonymous. At the start of the survey, you will be asked to create a confidential code to ensure the anonymity of your responses. Should you indicate your desire to participate in a follow-up interview, you will be asked for your e-mail however following this step, you will be de-identified using the code generated on your survey. Please note, your decision to participate will have no impact on academic standing or relationships within the teacher education program.
