Question Title

Team 1: Marie Curie

Marie Curie was born November 7, 1867 in Warsaw, Poland. Poland did not allow women to pursue a higher education so Marie moved to Paris, France to study. She was a physicist and chemist, who discovered polonium and radium. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the first person to win it in two different sciences – physics and chemistry. She was the first female professor at the University of Paris. While in the lab, she would carry radium in her lab coat pockets. She also developed mobile X-Ray machines that were used during World War I.

Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She disappeared flying over the Pacific Ocean. Our design's main focus is her Red Lockheed Vega 5B airplane. The backdrop includes a map of the world highlighting her flight route and where she disappeared. The year her flight took place, 1937 is placed at the top of the world map.

Team 3: Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin, also known as the “Queen of Soul”, was a singer, songwriter, pianist, and civil rights activist. She was the first woman inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Our creation has a Hollywood Walk of Fame Star with her name on it and a timeline of important events in her life. We included a lot of music notes to show that Aretha grew up surrounded by music and we built a Grammy Award to represent the 18 Grammy’s she won. She was and continues to be an idol to girls everywhere.

After graduating high school at 14, Johnson attended West Virginia State where math classes were developed specifically for her. She was the first African American woman to attend grad school at West Virginia University. Although she quit to focus on family, she later worked as “computer” for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, which later became the National Aeronautics and Space Act. John Glenn personally asked her to double-check the accuracy of the computer-generated calculations before his orbit mission.

She got involved in the battle because the British wouldn’t accept her adoptive son as her heir after her husband died. She was skilled in martial arts, shooting, horsemanship, and fencing. She was not considered to be the standard woman of the time. Rani died a hero’s death. She is remembered as the Warrior Queen and we built this monument to respect and honor her.

Nancy Lieberman is our hero. When it comes to basketball, there may not be a better ambassador for the game than her. The living legend’s list of accomplishments is virtually endless. Her basketball playing years from the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs, WNBA and Olympics combined with her career of becoming a Big 3 Head Coach and the first woman to coach a Professional Men’s team, she has been a trailblazer for women in Basketball. She also gives back to her community. The Nancy Lieberman Charities has events such as Laptops (IPADs) for Love and the NLC Educational Scholarships of $10,000.

She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian honor for her continued contributions to the arts. She has also received a National Arts Medal and is a recipient of a Kennedy Center Honor.

Called the Queen of Tejano music, she is one of the most iconic Mexican-Americans of the 20th Century. Even at a young age she made a long lasting impact on the music and fashion industry in America, using a mix of R&B, Latin Pop, Techno pop, Country Western and Disco. She was loved by almost everyone, and for that we chose her as our topic.
