What is the NPP?
The Neighborhood Preservation Program (NPP) is a five-year grant from the NJ Department of Community Affairs that is designed to generate visible, tangible change in the Downtown Neighborhood driven by local residents and business owners. Downtown Trenton (from Route 1 to N Willow Street, Lafayette to Perry Streets) is one of 40 NPP areas statewide.
 
What are the NPP Preservation and Exterior Grants?
These grants can be used to make exterior improvements to buildings in the NPP through small, yet impactful projects.

Funding is limited to exterior projects that are visual from the street. They may include but are not limited to rehabilitation, restoration, and major repairs (but not ongoing maintenance) of architectural details and features. 
 
Eligible Projects
  • Front Door replacement/repainting
  • Porch concrete repair/repainting
  • Exterior lighting improvements
  • Window repair/replacement
  • Painting (all colors must be approved)
  • Masonry repair
  • Historic character improvements: Repairing, replacing and/or adding architecturally appropriate cornices, doors, windows, decorative detail, porches, and siding
    • Adding or replacing architecturally appropriate design elements or lighting, especially where period-appropriate materials are used
 
How do I apply?
Rolling deadline, beginning January 1, 2024.  Projects need to be completed by December 16, 2024.
  • Applications will be reviewed and awarded by the NPP Stakeholders Group
  • Preference is given to properties owned by Trenton residents.
  • Applicants are responsible for complying with all City, State, and Federal requirements for permits and approval.
  • Applicants must own the property they intend to improve.
  • If you intend to complete the work yourself, please submit a written estimate of the projected total cost of materials. An NPP Grant may be used in conjunction with other grants or personal funds. This information must be disclosed on the completed application.
How much are the grants for?
  • Up to $5,000 each will be awarded for building enhancement projects in NPP.
    • A designated contractor by isles will be provided to the property owner and develop a price quote based on necessary repairs.
    • Payment will be made directly to the contractor
      • 50% upfront and 50% upon project completion and approval by the property owner.
