The Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA) establishes the framework for local authority (cities, towns, villages, specialized municipalities, school boards, for example) elections in the province. Métis Settlements and Irrigation Districts also rely on the LAEA to conduct their elections.

The province typically reviews the act after each set of municipal elections. The province is reviewing the act before the next municipal general election, which will occur in October 2021.

In addition, there have been recent amendments to the legislation governing provincial elections, the Election Act and the Election Finances and Contributions Disclosure Act.  This provides the opportunity to review the legislation and decide where, if applicable, there is alignment with provincial elections.
