Welcome to the AWARD project survey, exploring the use-case dedicated to port automation

The EU-funded H2020 AWARD project aims to develop systems for "All Weather Autonomous Real logistics operations and Demonstrations". The goal of this survey is to understand what brings value to automation for the different stakeholders resorting to this technology. Your answers will provide material to design business models for automated vehicles.

Please take 10 min to answer this short survey (19 questions)

The AWARD project faces four automated logistics use-cases at different sites including diverse stakeholders and users. This survey focuses on the use-case 2 dedicated to Hub-to-hub automation.

This survey is conducted by IRU and CARA. If you have any questions please contact Ted Zotos (ted.zotos@iru.org) and Constance Lauffet (constance.lauffet@cara.eu)

Question Title

Use-case description
This use-case aims at automating the connection from a production factory to a logistic hub for transporting production parts.

The electric automated vehicle (“swap body transporter”) will drive the boxes from the logistic hub to the production factory. The boxes are (un-)loaded manually in the production factory. The boxes are then carried back to the logistic hub. Lattice boxes are (un-)loaded manually on the vehicle in the logistic hub.

The automated vehicle will drive on both private and public roads, including crossings areas with traffic lights and a main road. This shuttle represents a 2 min drive (600m) and operates every full hour from 6 am to max. 10 pm, from Monday to Friday.  It is currently operated by a conventional human-driven truck.

The use of an automated vehicle, which is electric, will allow driving a shorter route. Conventional diesel trucks are not allowed to drive this new route, but electric vehicles are.

For the purpose of the survey, we question the business model considering that technology is mature (no safety driver on board: teleoperation of the vehicle).

Question Title

* 1. According to you, who are the potential stakeholders involved in such a use-case?

Question Title

* 2. In your opinion, what value does automation bring compared to a human-driven vehicle? (please rank the answers based on the added value of automation: from low, to high)

Low  Medium High I do not know
Safety
Reliability
Reduced human-personnel costs
Reduced operational costs (less fuel consumption, repair costs/insurance, etc.)
Improved working conditions
Improved efficiency
Improved environmental performance
Marketing (innovative image)

Question Title

* 3. Do you work for a transport fleet operator?

Question Title

* 4. [If you are a transport operator] Does your organization use a fleet management system for its activity, which integrates fleet operation information and ensures the supervision?

Question Title

* 5. [If you are a transport operator] please rate the automation level of your current fleet management system, from being fully manual (1) to fully automatic (5):

Fully manual (all fleet information is manually entered) Most fleet data is manually entered An equal amount of fleet data is recorded/entered automatically and manually Most fleet data is automatically entered/recorded Fully automated (all fleet information is automatically entered) I do not know
Current fleet management system

Question Title

* 6. [If you are a transport operator] please specify if your organization uses its own platform for fleet management or a platform provided by a service provider

Question Title

* 7. In your opinion, which additional resources are required for the shift from a conventional vehicle to an automated one, within the hub-to-hub use-case?

Question Title

* 8. Amongst these additional resources, which one would you purchase as a one-shot expense and which one as a recurring expense?

  One shot expense Recurring expense
Vehicle
Software
Supervision
Infrastructure
Safety validation
Reskilling
Reorganization of logistic process

Question Title

* 9. Shifting from a conventional to an automated vehicle takes time. How much would this transition would impact your decision to change technology towards AV operation (considering infrastructure, vehicle , training, software)?
