Application Rules for Forward Scholarship

The FFRF Forward Freethought College Scholarship is intended to support non-theistic individuals having compelling financial need to pursue secondary education at a private secular or public college/university.  Tuition scholarships up to the total amount of $5,000 will be awarded annually to a designated number of students who meet the following eligibility criteria:

—Have fulfilled the requirements for high school graduation
—Have demonstrated academic promise
—Have a commitment to a non-religious worldview
—Have the desire to further their educational goals

Tuition scholarships will be awarded to deserving applicants each year, as determined by FFRF’s Scholarship Committee, which will make the sole determination based upon personal references and information contained in students’ applications.

The inaugural scholarships in 2019 will be restricted to college-bound high school seniors, with an immediate timeline of applications, and notification by early August 2019.   In future years, the application deadline will be March 1st of every year, with successful applicants notified by June 1st, unless the Scholarship Committee announces otherwise.

The scholarship funding will be made directly to the school, although the committee may consider, in special circumstances, giving the funding directly to the student and/or making an additional stipend directly to the student. Qualifying students are expected to maintain a full course load of 12 to 16 credit hours for the term covered by the scholarship, unless the Scholarship Committee pre-approves part-time status and funding.  Scholarship awardees may re-apply in successive years with proof of satisfactory performance (what the college or university determines to be passing grades, minimally) as long as they continue to meet the stated eligibility criteria.

Student applicants are required to submit the following:

—Personal Information Form
—Essay (at least 200 words) addressing the topic, “Why I Identify as Non-Religious”
—Optional brief personal statement by applicant addressing financial need
—Financial Need Statement filled out by parent or guardian
Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Note: At the end of this application, you will be asked to upload a letter of recommendation and a copy of your admission to a college or university, as well as documentation of financial need.
