Taking Action to Reduce Opportunity Gaps: Putting Research into Practice

WERA’s annual December conference seeks to engage educators, researchers and evaluators in dialogue about how to improve opportunities and outcomes for Washington’s students. We invite you to submit conference sessions that address the conference theme through sharing evidence-based and promising practices in early learning, K-12 and postsecondary settings.  We have posed the three questions below in order to address dimensions of the conference theme:

In what ways can evidence from research and evaluations help educators identify and disrupt racial inequities in schools and communities?

What tools do we need to cultivate and strengthen a culture of continuous improvement that places students and families at the center of our work?

What are the critical beliefs and skills that educators need to ensure long-term commitments to close opportunity gaps?

We are looking for a rich variety of presentations that meet the varied needs of WERA members.
 
Conference Session Formats: For sessions scheduled on December 5-6, 2019, presenters may select from two different presentation formats:

Breakout Sessions: Breakout sessions are 30 or 75 minutes in length. These sessions typically focus on one topic, issue, or problem of practice that is of particular interest to a specific group of WERA participants.  
 
For breakout sessions, rooms will be set in theater style. LCD projectors, laptops, and screens will be provided.
 
Round Table Discussions: Round tables are 75-minutes in length. These sessions offer opportunities for the presenter(s) to engage directly with attendees within a small-group setting. This format is recommended for those who are interested in presenting on a topic that facilitates a two-way exchange of ideas with attendees present.
 
For Roundtable discussions, a single 10-person table will be provided for presenters and attendees to congregate. There will be 2 or 3 other Roundtable discussions happening simultaneously in the same large space. Because of this physical configuration, no additional audiovisual equipment, such as a screen or LCD projector, is provided. Presenters are encouraged to bring approximately 20 paper copies of any handouts they wish to distribute. For those who wish to use a laptop, please be sure the battery is charged.
 
Please note: Presenters will be expected to identify their preferred format when completing the accompanying conference proposal form.

WERA expects all presentations will be uploaded by November 30, 2019 so that attendees will have access at the conference.
Proposals must be submitted by June 1, 2019.
