THE 6TH ANNUAL PSNO PROVINCIAL PSW & PSW Supervisor CONFERENCE

CALL FOR WORKSHOPS
The Personal Support Network of Ontario (PSNO) invites you to submit a workshop proposal for our Annual PSW & PSW Supervisor Conference. Join us and share your expertise, experience and new ideas with our enthusiastic delegates. We anticipate 500 delegates for a day of outstanding workshops and plenary sessions.Your experience gained through practical approaches and research is vital to the promotion and sharing of promising approaches in the PSW field.

THEMES
We invite all interested to consider submitting an abstract for a 55 minute session presentation that will take place on Monday, October 15th 2012. The Conference Committee has developed a number of topics which they would like to see covered, but not limited to, at the conference. These include:
  • How technology will improve care in the future
  • Emerging Best Practice in Long Term Care
  • Medication Management
  • Foot care
  • Diabetic care
  • Nutrition and chronic disease (i.e. diabetes, celiac disease, feeding with denture problems, etc)
  • Effective communication and how to advocate for it in the workplace
  • Physical sexual assault and navigating the grey areas
  • Sexuality and Aging
  • PSW and aging well
  • Understanding Generation Y & Z PSWs and how to retain them
  • Role of PSW as a Supervisor
  • Nutrition
  • Working with clients with depression and schizophrenia
  • Understanding the "Changing the Conversation" campaign
  • Elder Abuse and Neglect
  • Compassionate communication
  • Mentoring and preceptorship
  • Highs and lows of cluster care
  • Caring for someone with Alzheimer and diabetes
  • Falls prevention
  • Assertiveness training
  • Cultural competencies
  • Resiliency training for staff dealing with discrimination in caregiving and how supervisors can be a support

The Conference Committee also welcomes abstracts that may not fall within the topics above and more than one sub theme can be addressed.
CRITERIA
Your abstract should be informative stating the problem, issue or project in the first paragraph. Briefly describe the manner in which it should be addressed from a PSW perspective and describe the findings, conclusions or solutions to the problem or situation. Evaluate the applicability of this workshop content, innovation or strategy to other PSW occupations (PSW, PA, Home support worker, etc) and the relevance to other settings (LTC, Home Care, Community Care, etc). Your abstract whenever possible, should be easily translated into a one-page takeaway for participants to convert knowledge to action. Guidelines for a one page takeaway will be provided to abstracts approved for the conference.

Your submission must include the title of the presentation, presenter(s) and organization(s), phone number(s), email(s), presentation description, abstract, preferred format, and audio-visual needs. Audio-visual equipment must be ordered in advance.

The deadline for abstract submissions is Friday April 27th, 2012.

Conference Sessions are 55 minutes in length inclusive of a 10 minute question period.

SELECTION PROCESS
Applicants will be notified by email/phone of the status of their submission. The contact person will be the only individual contacted regarding the submission.

NOTICE OF ACCEPTANCE
All applicants will be notified by email/phone of the status of their submission. The contact person will be the only individual contacted regarding the submission. All confirmed speakers will be sent a package including registration information. Speakers will receive complimentary registration (to a maximum of 2 speakers per session) to the conference. Registration includes all sessions, lunch, comfort breaks and conference materials. All presenters are responsible for any and all travel and accommodation expenses incurred.

PSNO will provide access to a microphone, projector and screen. If necessary laptops can also be provided upon request. Additional AV equipment can be negotiated.
