Part 1: Masonry Codes & Standards Update 2010

Course Presenter: Keith Lashway P.E., International masonry Institute.

Seminar attendees will learn about the new changes to the masonry codes and standards and how they relate to each other; gain a better understanding of select ASTM masonry standards; receive updates on 2008 MSJC Code requirements; and get a sneak peak at upcoming 2011 MSJC activities. Review of the Codes development processes, review select ASTM Masonry Standards, Masonry Codes and changes thereto. Review of upcoming future changes to masonry standards and guidlines.
Part 2: - Sustainable Building Projects with Concrete Masonry -

Course Presenter: Nicholas F. Carparelli, Executive Director - NYS Concrete Masonry Association.

This presentation will highlight the sustainable attributes of concrete masonry products. The presentation will identify credits in LEED v3 where masonry products can contribute towards the required point total for certification.

Participants will also learn about concrete masonry’s ability to improve indoor air quality due to its resistance to the growth of mold. The audience will understand masonry’s contribution towards fire safety, improved acoustics, energy efficiency, and safety and security in public buildings.

Additionally, attendees will receive an overview of the NY-CHPS Guidelines for High Performance Schools, learn how the NYS Education Department defines a High Performance School and masonry applications thereto.

As a result, participants will be able to:

1. Recognize concrete masonry’s inherent sustainable qualities
2. Understand how concrete masonry helps prevent the growth of mold
3. Gain knowledge of several changes in LEED v3 vs. 2.2
4. Learn how concrete masonry products can contribute to sustainable building projects in LEED v3 and the NY-CHPS Guidelines for High Performance Schools
