Introduction to Survey

Select Greater Philadelphia, the economic development marketing organization for the 11-county Greater Philadelphia region, is conducting a survey to identify organizations that currently conduct Research and Development (R&D) in the region, and describe the characteristics of the R&D activities they perform. It should take between 5 and 10 minutes to complete this survey depending on the number of different research fields that your organization lists below.

The results of this survey will be presented in summary form only. Answers to all questions will be kept confidential and will not be disclosed to third parties.

Presented above is a map of the Greater Philadelphia region. Our survey is only concerned with R&D activity your organization conducts at a facility located within the region.

Examples of activities that are considered R&D:

• Mapping the human genome
• Exploring outer space
• Determining how culture has affected the rate of economic growth in different countries
• Understanding how viruses work or developing medicine to treat or cure diseases
• Improving an existing production processes or products
• Determining the causes of the 2008 financial collapse
• Market feasibility studies
• Surveys measuring consumer acceptance of a new products or technologies
• Studying ways to increase the energy efficiency of equipment and buildings


Examples of activities that are NOT considered R&D:

• Education and training that does not directly support an R&D activity
• General purpose data gathering not in direct support of R&D
• Policy studies
• Patent applications
• Routine examinations and inspections
• Routine updating of existing software products
• Value engineering
• Periodic updating of existing software applications
• Financial evaluations – rate of return, cost benefit studies
