Tell us about a Boyle Heights Cultural Treasure

The Alliance for California Traditional Arts(ACTA) in partnership with Building Healthy Communities – Boyle Heights(BHC- BH) is looking to identify and document Boyle Heights Cultural Treasures.

What’s a cultural treasure? They are the people, groups, places and events that reflect cultural expressions that are valued by the community.

They can be a range of things, from the mariachis, to the murals, to folklorico, to elders to other hidden treasures, like garage bands, storytellers, jewelry makers, great cooks of traditional foods, and even certain occupations like instrument makers, among others. Bottom line is that Building Healthy Communities – Boyle Heights is looking to uncover and document these treasures that are valued in our community. We are looking to document the stories of the people and activities that are a portrait of community. Boyle Heights has such a great history of art, from homegrown bands (The Brat, Blues Experiment, Los Illegales) to artists (Ofelia Esparza, Jose Ramirez), to all the great things happenings underground that deserve greater appreciation.

All your submissions will be compiled and shared by the BHC-BH in a public event. Submit a Boyle Heights Cultural Treasure and your name will be entered in a drawing for gift certificates of different venues in Boyle Heights including Casa 0101, YMCA, Primera Taza, Arctic Hotspot Bakery and Café, and many more. Hurry submit your entries now!
