Assessing confidence and knowledge of warnings - internal

*
1. You are invited to participate in a study where you will be asked to read a scenario, select your intended response, and provide background information and potential reasons for your selection. The investigator is Kimberly Beam, a student working under the supervision of Dr. Marita O’Brien in the Psychology Department of the University of Alabama in Huntsville. We want to recruit 250 undergraduate and community member participants for this study. Please be advised that if you are under the age of 19 or you have previously participated in Dr. O'Brien's "Personal Experience Discussion", you cannot participate in this study.

PROCEDURE TO BE FOLLOWED IN THE STUDY: Participants who are 19 and older will click directly on the survey link where they will read a scenario after rating their baseline confidence judgments on their knowledge and ability to respond in tornadic situations. They will make a selection from provided responses before rating another series of confidence judgments. They will complete the survey by filling out a demographics page before being given a debriefing. Participants completing the survey for psychology research activity credits will enter their email address at the end of the survey to document participation. The study is expected to take less than 30 minutes to complete.

DISCOMFORTS AND RISKS FROM PARTICIPATING IN THE STUDY: Completing this study is similar to everyday Internet activity. There is no physical risk associated with this study.

EXPECTED BENEFITS: Personal benefit includes 1 research activity credit if you are a student enrolled in introductory level psychology courses at UAH. The benefit to science is an understanding of what information is needed for tornado warnings in an attempt to improve risk communication to residents in tornado prone areas.

CONFIDENTIALITY OF RESULTS: Data for your session will be recorded as a participant number; thus, results are strictly confidential. Consent forms will be signed electronically at the beginning of the study, and deleted a year after the study has ended. The data from your session will only be released to those individuals who are directly involved in the study, and none of the data will have specific personal information that could lead to the knowledge of any participant during data analysis.

FREEDOM TO WITHDRAW: If for any reason you are uncomfortable answering any of the questions, you can withdraw at any point during the study. There is no penalty to withdrawing from the study; however, you will not receive credit for your participation.

No individuals under the age of 19 will be allowed to participate in this study

This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board at UAH and will expire in one year from September 1st, 2013.
