To Congresswoman Herrera-Beutler, Senator Murray and Senator Cantwell

I oppose the short-sighted plans for exploratory drilling that could lead to industrial-scale mining near Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. Mount St. Helens – site of the most destructive volcanic explosion on U.S. soil in recent history —is a unique national treasure which should be protected for future generations. Mount St. Helens and the surrounding Gifford Pinchot National Forest’s beauty draws hikers, birders, anglers, hunters, horsemen, mountain bikers and paddlers from all over the country, allowing local businesses to thrive. The potential open pit mine poses a real threat of damaging our national landmark, given the pollution track record of mines in this country. There are other places to mine copper and gold, but nowhere else in the country like Mount St. Helens. As a citizen and part owner of our public lands I urge you to turn down any attempt to drill or mine near Mount St. Helens. Thanks, but we want one, not two, craters in southwest Washington.

Sincerely,
