As a Practice or Community Nurse, you regularly care for people who are suffering from mental health issues, some of which might be undetected and untreated. Those with long term conditions are more likely to experience depression and anxiety, affecting the outcomes of their physical illness. People with a severe mental illness are also more likely to experience poor physical health and have a shorter life expectancy than the general population. Ninety-five per cent of mental health problems are dealt with in primary care. With the relevant training and support, you are in a position to influence the outcomes of these patients.

Mental Health Trusts across North East and Central London, supported by UCLPartners, are providing free mental health training for Practice Nurses. You are able to select from a programme of ten modules: five face to face and five e-learning.

Dates are currently available for Module 1, 'Mental Health Awareness' and participating Mental Health Trusts are offering a variety of training dates from January through to March 2014 for you to choose from. Training sessions are 3 hours long. Places are allocated on a first come first served basis.

'Mental Health Awareness' is a compulsory first module for all nurses wishing to take future modules and has been designed to give Practice and Community Nurses a good understanding of the various mental health issues that they will meet in primary care. Nurses are then encouraged to undertake Modules 2 - 5, which will be available to book shortly.

**Practice Nurses who complete all four face to face modules will be highly commended and will receive a 'Mental Health Friendly Practice Certificate' for their GP Practice
