Positive and Negative Experiences of Multiracial Identities Survey

1. Welcome, and thank you for your willingness to participate in this study. Please read the following informed consent information before beginning the survey.

This research is being conducted by Tanya Chen, M.A, a psychology doctoral candidate at the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology. This project is under the direction of Dr. Jill Bloom, a professor at the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology.

Participation Criteria
You are eligible to participate if you:

• Self-identify as biracial or multiracial;
• Are over the age of 18;
• Are fluent in English;
• Have lived in the U.S. for a minimum of 5 years.

Purpose
The purpose of this research is to learn more about the positive and negative factors associated with being bi or multiracial.

Procedures
You will shortly begin a demographics questionnaire followed by a survey that will take approximately 15 to 30 minutes to complete.

Refusal or Withdrawal from Participation
Participation in this study is voluntary. You may discontinue the survey at any time by closing your web browser.

Privacy and Confidentiality
All responses to this survey will remain anonymous and computer IP addresses will be excluded. Data from completed surveys will be encrypted through Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and stored electronically by SurveyMonkey.com. All information extracted from the SurveyMonkey website for data analysis will be stored in password-protected files. Upon completion of this study, data stored on SurveyMonkey.com will be destroyed.

Risks and Discomforts
Given the subject matter of the survey, there exists the potential that participation may create psychological discomfort. In the event that significant psychological distress occurs, you are urged to contact a local mental health care provider, or emergency services. Benefits
Participation in this study will aid the body of research on bi and multiracial individuals.

Use of Data
Data collected in this study will be used for the completion of the primary researcher’s doctoral dissertation. Data collected in this study may be used for future publication and presentations.

Consent
I have read and understood the purpose of this research. I acknowledge my participation in this study is voluntary and have been informed that all responses will be anonymous. I was informed that I have the right to discontinue the survey at any time by closing the browser. I have been informed that some of the questions in this study may cause psychological discomfort. I have been informed of how to contact the principal researcher of this study should I have any questions or concerns. I understand that if I experience any overwhelming distress related to participation in this study, I should contact a local mental health provider, or emergency services. I understand I can access local mental health providers and other resources of support by visiting the following APA link: http://www.apa.org/helpcenter/index.aspx. I have been informed that data collected in this survey will be used for the completion of the primary researcher’s doctoral dissertation and may be used in the future for publication.
