Perceived Parenting Style

1.You are being asked to participate in a research study concerning perceived parenting styles and sexual orientation. We are seeking to discover if parenting style, as reported from your viewpoint, has an impact on certain aspects of sexual orientation.

You will be asked to complete 3-4 assessments asking questions about yourself and your parents. Since this study is concerned with the impact of certain parenting styles we ask that you answer questions regarding your MAJOR PARENTAL FIGURES, these are people who have been the most present and constant in your life (please choose no more than two parents). We also ask that, unless otherwise specified, you recall the years of your adolescence and answer the questions regarding your parents based on this era. You will not be required to leave any identifying information, unless you choose to do so. The whole study should take approximately 30 minutes to finish.

It is possible that some questions may result in your remembering unpleasant events that may have occurred in the past or current distressing situations. In the event that you become upset or would like counseling services, you may contact Governors State University for free services.

If you are a GSU student, free counseling is available at The Counseling Center located in the Academic Resource Center, B1215. Office hours are Monday–Thursday 8:30 a.m.–7 p.m. and Fridays 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m. For personal counseling, contact Dr. Katherine Helm, 708.235.7334.

If you are not a GSU student, free counseling is available through the University Counseling Lab. For more information, call 708.534.4545.

Although Governors State University’s’ policy does not provide for compensation for treatment of any injuries that may result from participation in research activities, this should not be construed as a waiver of any legal rights or distress you might have as a result of participation in this study. There are no direct benefits to you for participating in this survey. However, at the end of the study, there will be an option for you to leave your email address if you wish to be included in a raffle for $25 Visa Gift cards.

Your participation in this study will be completely anonymous and confidential. Therefore, no identifying information is required. Raw data will be sent through a survey link to this investigator's computer and secured by Survey Monkey's infrastructure. All information obtained from the study will be summarized and reported in the form of group results. You will not be identifiable in any reports or publications about the study and none of the information you provide will be traceable back to you. If you choose to leave your email address for inclusion in the raffle, a person who is unaffiliated with this study will use this email address only for the raffle and will delete it once the raffle is completed.

Your participation is completely voluntary. You are free to decide if you wish to participate in this study or to withdraw at any time without any penalty or prejudice to you.
