To identify potential ways to improve Capital Transit and Care-A-Van services, the City and Borough of Juneau is developing a Comprehensive Operations Analysis and Transit Development Plan. There are three primary goals of this project:
- Conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the existing Capital Transit and Care-A-Van transit system
- Assess the needs and priorities for service improvements and potential service expansion
- Develop alternatives that improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the system
Based on the comprehensive evaluation of existing services, including extensive community and rider surveys (click here to find out more), several key findings about the system have been identified:
- Good to excellent service to most areas
- High ridership and very productive (on par with much larger systems)
- Many crowded buses
- High passenger and community satisfaction
- Very convenient timed transfers between routes at key locations (when on schedule)
But, we also know that there are several operational issues that need to be addressed, including:
- An increasing number of transfers are being missed
- There is not enough recovery and layover time for drivers
- The Express route does not reach the Downtown Transportation Center
- There is overcrowding on some routes and trips (especially late afternoon)
And, there are additional service demands, including:
- Service to Riverside Drive
- Service to the Lemon Creek industrial area (Costco, Home Depot, etc.)
- Earlier and later service hours
- Dedicated downtown shuttle
- Service to the Ferry Terminal
- Weekday evening service to UAS Auke Bay and UAS
- Later Sunday service
- Holiday service
To address these issues and additional demands, three different transit service scenarios have been developed. The scenarios are concepts at this point and will be refined based on the feedback we receive. We want to hear from you!
