Information Sheet

What is this survey?

This is a census survey which is being distributed to all headteachers of state-funded secondary schools in Scotland.  The survey aims to explore headteachers’ views and experiences around Senior Phase curriculum design.

The aim of the research is to:

Explore the views and experiences of Headteachers around Senior Phase curriculum design; and
Provide up to date information about the development of the Senior Phase curriculum, and the factors that are driving curriculum design in Scottish secondary schools

Why is your response important?

The ability for schools to decide what is best for their learners is a key principle of CfE and of the empowering schools agenda. Headteachers’ views are therefore crucial in helping the Scottish Government to gain a fully rounded view of the Senior Phase in Scotland’s secondary schools, as well as the influences on its design.

Which headteachers are included?

The survey is being sent to the headteachers of all state-funded secondary schools in Scotland. The Scottish Government is keen to hear from as many headteachers as possible.

When will the survey run?

The survey will go live on Wednesday 29th May. It will remain open for 3 weeks, closing at 12 noon on Wednesday 19th June.

How long will it take to complete the survey?

The survey will take around 40 minutes to complete.

Can I return to the survey?

You can return to complete the survey later using the same link to the survey, as long as you use the same PC or laptop. If you need to exit the browser and come back to the survey at another time, please ensure you have clicked ‘Next’ at the bottom of the page that you are on.  This will ensure that your answers are saved.

Who will administer the survey?

Following a competitive tendering exercise last autumn, the Scottish Government commissioned the independent research company Rocket Science to administer the survey. Rocket Science will manage the survey fieldwork, analysis and reporting. If you have any questions about the survey, please call Cristiana Orlando on 0131 226 4949 or cristiana.orlando@rocketsciencelab.co.uk.

Is the survey confidential and how will results be reported?

Researchers at Rocket Science will have access to the returned surveys. Rocket Science will summarise the findings in a report which will be published on the Scottish Government website later this year.  Quotes may be used for illustrative purposes. This will only be done after they have been fully anonymised and after all information that might enable identification of an individual or school has been removed.   Individual headteachers and schools will not be identifiable in the report.  Quantitative data from closed questions will be shared with researchers at the Scottish Government for additional analysis.

How has the survey questionnaire been designed?

The survey questionnaire has been designed by researchers at Rocket Science in collaboration with Scottish Government and a Research Advisory Group which included representation from Education Scotland, ADES, the University of Edinburgh (Moray House) and the Scottish Government.
